Most transceivers use standard duplex connections — one fiber strand to transmit, a separate strand to receive, for two strands per link. BiDi (bidirectional) transceivers do the same job over a single strand, and that difference can matter a lot when fiber capacity is limited or expensive to add.

How BiDi Actually Works

A BiDi transceiver transmits and receives on two different wavelengths of light over the same single fiber strand — for example, transmitting at 1270nm while receiving at 1330nm. Because the two signals are on different wavelengths, they don’t interfere with each other even though they’re sharing one physical strand. BiDi modules are always sold in matched pairs, since each end needs its transmit wavelength to match the other end’s receive wavelength.

Why This Matters for Cost

Running new fiber — especially between buildings, across a campus, or through existing conduit that’s already full — can be expensive or physically impossible without major construction. A BiDi deployment effectively doubles the number of links you can support over existing fiber capacity, since each connection only ties up one strand instead of two.
