Ordering the wrong transceiver is an easy, common, and completely avoidable mistake. Before adding one to your cart, work through these five questions in order — each one narrows the field until only the right part is left.
1. What Speed Does the Link Actually Need?
This is set by the ports on both ends of the connection, not by what you’d like to have. A 10G switch port needs a 10G-rated module; putting a 100G-rated module on a 10G port doesn’t make the link faster, and in most cases it simply won’t negotiate a connection at all.
2. What Distance Are You Covering?
Transceivers are rated for a maximum reach, commonly labeled SR (short reach), LR (long reach), ER (extended reach), or ZR (extra-long reach). Buying a short-reach module for a long run between buildings will fail or perform unreliably — buying a long-reach module for a short in-rack connection works, but usually costs more than necessary for no benefit.
3. Single-Mode or Multi-Mode Fiber?
This depends on the fiber already installed, not personal preference. Single-mode and multi-mode transceivers are not interchangeable — plugging a single-mode module into a multi-mode run (or the reverse) will not work correctly, even though the connector may physically fit.
4. What Form Factor Does the Port Take?
SFP, SFP+, QSFP, and QSFP28 are physically different sizes tied to different speed tiers. Check the exact port type on your switch or network card — this is usually printed on the hardware itself or listed in its datasheet.
5. Is It Coded for Your Specific Hardware?
Many switch manufacturers require transceivers to carry vendor-specific programming to be recognized. A compatible (non-OEM) transceiver coded correctly for your exact switch model will work identically to an OEM part — but it needs to be coded for that model specifically, not just “compatible in general.”
Can I mix transceiver brands on the same link?
Yes, as long as both ends are rated for the same speed, distance, and fiber type. The transceiver brand itself doesn’t need to match on both ends.
What happens if I pick the wrong distance rating?
A module rated for shorter distances than the actual run typically won’t establish a reliable link at all, rather than just running slower. It’s an all-or-nothing failure, not a gradual one.
Where do I find my switch’s exact port and compatibility requirements?
Check the switch manufacturer’s datasheet or transceiver compatibility guide, usually available on their support site, or check the physical port label on the hardware itself.
